In the humid foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, a lover cracks an egg against a china rim and searches its gloss for meaning. Clocks tick in reverse; phones ring out unanswered; Trojan horses arrive at the gates of the human heart and debts are repaid in gold dental fillings. Red-leather-clad and pitchfork-wielding in a playful nod to Grant Wood’s celebrated painting of 1930, Mattiel’s Atina Mattiel Brown and Jonah Swilley proffer songs which ponder the American everyday of the 2020s, teeth to the flesh of a tender Georgia peach as they serve up an album tasting more like home than ever before.
Renowned for his eloquent Americana style, engaging live shows, and off-the-cuff clever observations, John Craigie carries on the legacy of classic singer-songwriters, while blazing a trail of his own. Recently, that trail twisted and turned into new territory for the Portland, OR performer who The Stranger appropriately dubbed, “the lovechild of John Prine and Mitch Hedberg.” His music speaks loud to both audiences and fellow artists. Todd Snider notably hand-delivered a gift on-stage, and Chuck Norris has sent fan mail. His fifth full-length album, No Rain, No Rose boasted two collaborations with Gregory Alan Isakov, namely “Highway Blood” and “I Am California.” Both quickly cracked One Million Spotify streams and counting as his knack for a captivating narrative and rustic aural palettes powered the 13-track offering together.
When Craigie plays, it’s one of those special shows that can make you laugh and cry in the same song. It’s a musical journey that can’t be denied.

C’est qu’ils avaient réussi un joli tour de force avec leur premier disque, “Night Birds“ ! Deux ans plus tard, revoilà Yellow Teeth, avec un deuxième album au moins autant racé. “Rags And Pearls“ dévoile dix titres intenses, où la chaleur y est vraie, incandescente, rougeâtre, organique, mais où le ton dépeint le temps qui passe, qui casse, et où il susurre les morsures de la vie et les tours et autres détours de ce que certains nomment le destin.
Derrière ces dents pas si jaunes que ça, il y a un coffre d’où émane un phrasé chaleureux, qui mène avec sa guitare teintée de fragilité cette americana franche. Franche, puisqu’elle explore sans se cacher les facettes plus sombres de cette espèce bizarre que nous sommes, entre les peurs et notre incapacité à faire sens de la mort, de l’amour, constatant les inséparables qui se séparent et l’absurdité des débuts et de leurs fins.
Enregistré en janvier 2016 au Studio de la Fonderie avec l’hyperactif Sacha Ruffieux (Kassette, Polar, Sinner DC), toujours accompagné de sa fine équipe de musiciens (dont certains jouent aussi dans The Company Of Men, Gustav, etc.), Tiziano Zandonella et Yellow Teeth livrent ainsi avec “Rags And Pearls“ un album raffiné, aux compositions sculptées avec soin. Un album pas tout rose, néanmoins, qui questionne les limites du couple, l’impuissance face à la grande inconnue et aux équations incompréhensibles de l’appartenance, le tout avec une finesse d’écriture comme en croise trop rarement. Un grand album.

Une soirée consacrée au mythique label du Reverend Beat-Man avec deux groupes de l’écurie Voodoo Rythm. Le garage psychédélique des vieux briscards imprévisibles Roy And The Devil’s Motorcycle et l’Americana Blue Grass du troubadour multi-talents Andy Dale Petty. Il a traversé les Etats-Unis en long et en large, seul avec sa guitare, à pieds et en train comme les “hobo” de l’époque pour se retrouver à La Parenthèse ce soir. L’Amérique sur un plateau proposé par un label bernois c’est une soirée immanquable.
